ClimaXchange

In response to the climate march of 15 March 2019, where several thousand young people gathered in Luxembourg City, the government has taken the initiative to engage in a constructive dialogue with young people on climate change and its mitigation through ClimateXchange.

Following the large-scale climate change protests (Climate strike) in March 2019, Ministers Claude Meisch (National Education and Children's Affairs and Youth), Carole Dieschbourg (Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development) and Romain Schneider (Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development) invited a total of around 500 students to the dialogue. The meetings took place in the framework of the newly established ClimateXchange from 8 to 17 May and were organised in close cooperation with the National Conference of School Students (CNEL)). On 19 May, the CNEL presented its report.

A key concern of the students is that their concerns about the future, triggered by climate change, are taken seriously. In their report, the students put forward proposals for making schools, public life, the environment and agriculture more sustainable. The aim of the proposals is to meet the climate targets and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The students want to lead by example and advocate for more sustainable schools and education.

However, the challenges that climate change poses to Luxembourg society can only be solved collectively. Therefore, the students do not only see themselves and the Luxembourg citizens as responsible, but also the Luxembourg government. Only through collaborative action by all stakeholders can the necessary changes be made in all areas of Luxembourg society.

The government is committed to analysing the report and taking the necessary measures. It will, for example, feed into the national climate and energy plan and the strategic plan for agriculture.
